Attention Everyone!

Starting May 23rd Garfield Community Farm will be joined by Knotweed Farm of Stanton Heights at Valley View Presbyterian Church for a weekly farmer’s market. This will happen EVERY WEDNESDAY through October from 3pm to 7pm.

At the May markets we’ll have tomato and herb plants for sale, salad mix, chard, kale, braising mixes, herbs, and more. Come out and get some fresh veggies from your most local urban farms!

I never expected this fall and winter to bring so many opportunities to Garfield Farm. Our board chair and I were talking yesterday about our intent to keep things small and manageable. We’re not looking to make a big, city wide non-profit or anything. We just want to grow vegetables in and for the neighborhood of Garfield. But, this year we’ll be doing some things that I didn’t really see coming, good things!

First, we’re starting a 10 session field trip program with a variety of local schools. This is run by one of our board members who is volunteering her time. Should be awesome, and next year we plan to expand it and make it a permanent part of our ministry.

Second, we are taking some growing responsibility at The Pittsburgh Project urban farm on the north side. Why? Because our bioshelter isn’t built yet and they have a 60 x 30 foot high tunnel open for our use. We’ll grow all of our seedlings there and lots of micro and demi greens for Salt of the Earth.

Salt of the Earth… with our expanding Garfield gardens and our use of the high tunnel and fields in the North Side we’ll be able to make Cornelius full time and probably hire another part time high school student. That in addition to our interns for the summer. We’ll be focusing a lot more on sustaining the ministry by selling high quality vegetables to Salt and other restaurants. Excited about this.

We’re building a smaller, low cost Polytunnel in Garfield over about a 60 foot section of wooden raised beds. All of our tomatoes will be grown in there. Very excited about this. We start building this week!

We’ve begun work on a “hugelkultur” garden. Basically we’re burying old tree branches, coffee grounds, compost and tree trunks in the ground, covering it all with soil, and we’ll be growing in it. The new garden will have a diversity of plants, both perennial and annual. Also planning lots of flowers and wildlife habitat for that space. Should be beautiful.

CSA 2012, Sign Up Now!

While the details for this year’s CSA are still being decided upon, we are accepting sign ups now. To reserve your CSA share please email John at garfieldcommunityfarm@gmail.com

The CSA in 2011 was a great success and lasted 20 weeks from June 1 – October 15. We are making some changes and new plans for 2012 but expect a very similar CSA plan. The suggested donation was $400 last and will be around the same for 2012.

Winter Harvest

This was our first season to go beyond our little greenhouse and try out some low tunnels and mini hoop houses on the farm. It’s been a warm winter and so our harvest has been great! It’s exciting to realize that we can grow food under cover and harvest after a 10 degree night in January!

Great Day at the Food Bank

Once a month Valley View Presbyterian Church holds a large food bank distribution. They serve around 120 families on most months. We’ve been trying to give away as much of whatever we have in abundance each month. Today it was collard greens and salad greens. Two things that our neighbors in Garfield absolutely love! Today was extra exciting because it was the first day that our interns participated in the food bank. One of our interns this summer, Teresa is helping to head up the Urban Kitchen Project for the farm. One of our plans is to demonstrate during and before the foodbank how to cook the produce we’re giving away. Today Teresa demonstrated how to make some amazing and healthy salad dressings. She did an awesome job and everyone loved the samples they took. The coordinator of the project, Anna, has been great too at pulling together the right team and tying up all the little details that surely would have missed. It was a special morning seeing so many people blessed by the fresh produce we had to offer and also seeing them love the salad and dressings we were whipping up.

Great job all! This is what it’s all about!
