While the details for this year’s CSA are still being decided upon, we are accepting sign ups now. To reserve your CSA share please email John at garfieldcommunityfarm@gmail.com

The CSA in 2011 was a great success and lasted 20 weeks from June 1 – October 15. We are making some changes and new plans for 2012 but expect a very similar CSA plan. The suggested donation was $400 last and will be around the same for 2012.

Winter Harvest

This was our first season to go beyond our little greenhouse and try out some low tunnels and mini hoop houses on the farm. It’s been a warm winter and so our harvest has been great! It’s exciting to realize that we can grow food under cover and harvest after a 10 degree night in January!

Great Day at the Food Bank

Once a month Valley View Presbyterian Church holds a large food bank distribution. They serve around 120 families on most months. We’ve been trying to give away as much of whatever we have in abundance each month. Today it was collard greens and salad greens. Two things that our neighbors in Garfield absolutely love! Today was extra exciting because it was the first day that our interns participated in the food bank. One of our interns this summer, Teresa is helping to head up the Urban Kitchen Project for the farm. One of our plans is to demonstrate during and before the foodbank how to cook the produce we’re giving away. Today Teresa demonstrated how to make some amazing and healthy salad dressings. She did an awesome job and everyone loved the samples they took. The coordinator of the project, Anna, has been great too at pulling together the right team and tying up all the little details that surely would have missed. It was a special morning seeing so many people blessed by the fresh produce we had to offer and also seeing them love the salad and dressings we were whipping up.

Great job all! This is what it’s all about!

Thursday Work Nights

New Fruit Trees!

A couple of days ago our scion wood and root stock came in the mail. Scion wood are small branches from specific apple varieties that are grafted onto whatever kind of rootstock you desire: standard size, dwarf, semi-dwarf, and everything in between. These little trees will probably grow in pots for a while before they’re transplanted out into the field. Some of them will go to Garfield Farm and some will go to Lamppost Farm.

We also received our pear trees, already grafted and ready to be planted. They are much larger than the scion wood. These trees are going in at Garfield Farm later today.

All of our trees are old varieties that produce beautiful tasty apples and pears not available at the store. Hopefully some of the ones we planted two years ago will start bearing this year!

Thursday Night Learning and Volunteer Experiences

Starting in April we’ll be gathering at the farm to learn together while we work at the farm. This year we’ve added a small sand box for the very little ones to play in and we’ll be working to involve kids of all ages. We’re also going to try to focus on learning over getting work done. This week we’ll start by learning to plant salad greens and possibly learn to plan microgreens, two things any of you can do at home in a window sill. Can’t wait to see you at the farm! Check out the picture of what the farm used to look like. Now you have to come out and see what it looks like now!
